Broken Lane defends their title at the second Anime Expo Battle of the Bands!
7-03-08

After a long hiatus, (just under a year long) Broken Lane is back in action. As a kick-off to many more things to come, we were invited to defend our title as the AXbotb Champions! This year, we competed against three other bands - The Black Crystals, Fire Riser and The Ownage - to hold the title. But that wasn't even half of the show.

This year, we prepared our own version of the Sambo Master song, Seishun Kyousoukyoku. (5th opeinng theme for the anime series Naruto) The AXidol sex symbol Jose Sanchez returned, this year singing lead and, of course, playing a solo on his trumpet and bassist Melody Barthe returned as a permanent member of the band.

Opening the show up was the popular Japanese Goth Rock band known as Gagaaling and closing the show, after the battle was done, was the Japanese Pop Rock band, LM.C - Both pro bands rocked the house down for the most entertaining night of Anime Expo 2008.

As the rules say, we get to return to defend our title one more time for Anime Expo 2009. Hope to see you all there!

Also! Stay tuned for new music and shows in the very near future!

Broken Lane wins the first annual AX Battle of the Bands!

Anyone who knows us knows that we love to watch anime. So, every year since 2003, (2005 for Juz and Melody) we've been regular attendees at Anime Expo. Usually, we run around with instruments and randomly jam with random people, hang out during open mic at Karaoke and compete in all of the Karaoke contests and AX Idol for some of us. It's all in good fun.

This year, we heard that there was going to be a Battle of the Bands at Anime Expo, so we prepared a song just for the contest and entered. Since we're good friends with the official AX Idol Sex Symbol, Jose Sanchez, we asked him if he'd like to play some trumpet with us for the battle. And, since Jobob couldn't make it, we got a close friend of our's, Melody, to play the bass. All went well for our audition tape and we made it to the finals. At the finals, we were asked to perform two songs, instead of one. No problem, says the Classic Eight, we've got more for the anime fans. So, we played two songs: "Don't Bother None" and "Want it all Back", both from the anime Cowboy Bebop and written by the most awesome, Yoko Kanno.

The battle went on a bit late. But, no one cared because all of the bands were more than good enough to wait for. Playing against us were Ii Kanji, a hip hop group from Boulder, Colorado and The Black Crystals, an anime and video games tribute band from California.

If you attended Anime Expo this year and missed the Battle of the Bands, we strongly suggest that you make it to the battle next year. As for us... I don't think we'll be able to compete in it again. But, who knows? Maybe we'll be there for that encore the crowd was shouting for...
